COPING WITH EXAM STRESS
When something is important and meaningful for us we pay attention to it and when we pay attention to those things, it can create little stress in our mind because we want to perform well. Examination is one such important and meaningful part of our life. So, it will create little stress which can actually be positive for us and it can push us to make efforts and can motivate us to perform well. In psychological terms this type of stress which is good for us is known as eustress. However, when stress becomes difficult to handle, we can adopt some strategies to help us deal with the pressure. One such strategy is cognitive reframing which includes, consciously shifting our attention from negative thoughts like: exams give us stress and challenges; to positive thoughts like what can be the benefit of giving exams and how these exams are going to create a sense of discipline in our life and are going to teach us the importance of time management and hard work. When we make efforts to shift our perspective to a more positive side, we feel relaxed and undisturbed. Another strategy is to follow a good study routine by making a time table or creating a to-do list including sufficient breaks and following spaced study sessions. Creating an organized and positive study environment is another important strategy to deal with examination stress. Finally, having self belief and positive mindset will keep us motivated to perform well in the exams as well as in life.
